Slouching Towards Blue Skies 3: Bottom of the Sea, Bottom of the Barrel

Marvin Rees, the ever useless austerity apologist masquerading as Bristol mayor now says he wants a conversation about the city's monuments to its racist past. What possible conversation do you imagine happening? Slavery is a foul stain on humanity. There, done. DONE!

Now, following on from that fascinating talk, it then follows we need to undo that legacy. We can start by smashing the monuments to it that exist. It's one thing to have museum where people can learn about this stuff (which Bristol has, such as the M Shed). It's another for the likes of the Merchant Venturers (George Ferguson, the former mayor, is a member) to make excuses.

Marvin is also a man of colour. How much does he enjoy licking the boot of his masters in power? It's a disgusting sight, but he's been at it since he was elected. Like so many red Tories, he is a Labour in name only. A willing peddler of austerity: like all of them they cry crocodile tears but refuse to use the tools they have at their disposal to protect the city. Instead vulnerable people's services are cut.

We'll take no lectures.

We also don't need him fishing out this statue and putting it in a museum. Leave it where it sits, rotting and rusting at the bottom of a dirty harbour. If you want to take a look buy an aqualung (and some injections!) and dive down deep.

He's a bootlicker. An apologist for the state and the state don't care about him as a person of colour.

A tide seems to be turning. A shift in consciousness of the sort that must precede change. I don't know if Trump will get voted out. Hopefully as he is singularly awful, but that means another old white reactionary takes power. Biden might not be as narcsisstically psychotic as Trump, but no answers lie there, and they never will. I doubt we'll see police reform under the Dems anymore than the Pubs. They are both institutionalised ruling class elites.

At least we won't - hopefully - get the spectacle of a pouting billionaire baby posting conspiracy theories about a man getting his skull smashed against the pavement by cops. Pigs who, when one of them got charged (rightly), closed ranks and applauded in support. How many more examples do people need of this dysfunctional system when, policing a protest against violent racist policing, they still engage in violent racist policing. In another life that would be called irony. Here it's buried under esprit de corps. Protect and serve. Of course they stand shoulder to shoulder, that's how they are taught, and that's the problem!

Years and years ago, before anyone had ever heard of disease and pandemics, I started this blog. I gave it a stupid name from an Alan Partri...
